Graduating as a designer from the Antwerp Royal Academy in 1982, Dirk Bikkembergs first emerged as one of the Antwerp Six. His rise to fame got underway when he launched an original self-designed shoe collection in 1985 which was subsequently followed by ready-to-wear collections for men and women. The fact that Bikkembergs is very much a man walking his own path was repeatedly shown by his predilection for fashion shows which were every bit as special as they were conspicuous. Dividing his time between Belgium, France, Italy, Germany, London and New York, the designer rarely spends longer than a week at a time in one location. Referring to himself as a workaholic, he recently commented to ID magazine: “I‘m married to fashion and I intend to be a faithful husband”. |
