The son of abstract painter Dan Van Severen, after training as an architect for a number of years, in 1985 Maarten Van Severen started designing his own creations, which he fashioned with his own hands in his Ghent workshop: restrained wooden and aluminium chairs and tables as well as products in any number of different materials including polyester, bacelite, multiplex, ...
Fascinated by the relation between his furniture pieces and their architectural environment, Van Severen worked with Rem Koolhaas on a number of prestigious projects including Maison à Bordeaux and the Casa da Musica. In 2005, he designed a garden pavilion for the Boxy brothers which earned him a nomination for the catalogue and the traveling exhibition of the Mies van der Rohe Award 2007 |
